Degenerative Disc Treatment in Miami

Degenerative disc disease describes age- or injury-related changes in the spinal discs. As a disc loses hydration and height, it may become less effective at absorbing stress. These changes can contribute to neck or back pain, stiffness, nerve compression, spinal stenosis, or instability. Disc degeneration is common on imaging and does not always cause symptoms, so treatment should be based on the complete clinical picture rather than an MRI finding alone.
Most patients begin with nonsurgical care, including physical therapy, core strengthening, activity and ergonomic changes, weight management when appropriate, and medication. Selected injections may help identify or treat pain arising from irritated nerves or arthritic joints.
Surgery is considered only when a specific structural problem can be connected to persistent, function-limiting symptoms. Options may include decompression when nerves are compressed, spinal fusion to stabilize a painful or unstable segment, or artificial disc replacement in carefully selected patients. The choice depends on the location of disease, spinal alignment, bone quality, and whether motion preservation is appropriate.
