Spondylolisthesis Care in Miami

Spondylolisthesis occurs when one vertebra slips forward or backward relative to the vertebra next to it. It may result from degeneration, a stress fracture in part of the vertebra called the pars, congenital anatomy, trauma, or previous surgery. Some patients have no symptoms, while others develop back pain, leg pain, numbness, weakness, or difficulty standing and walking.
Mild or stable cases may be managed with activity modification, anti-inflammatory or pain medication, physical therapy, core strengthening, and sometimes bracing. Injections may be used to address associated nerve or joint inflammation. Periodic imaging may be recommended to monitor the slip.
Surgery may be considered when pain or neurological symptoms remain disabling, the slip progresses, or significant instability is present. Treatment may include decompression of compressed nerves and fusion of the unstable level using screws, rods, and bone graft. In selected younger patients with an isolated pars defect, direct repair may preserve motion. The surgical plan depends on the type and severity of the slip and the patient’s overall spinal alignment.
